The wait is over. After three long years, Chicago band Varsity is back with a single that is retrospective to their old sound.
Varsity's most recent album Fine Forever released in 2020 did not leave much of a striking impression, with most songs sharing a resemblance to each other, but this new song has shown that Varsity could be back on their musical track.
Done With Bits encapsulates a mindset of ‘you can love me or leave me’, with an emphasis on the ‘you can love me’ side. "What's the point in being alone?" they ask.
It harks back to an older album of theirs, The Basement Takes, which was released in 2019 but is an accumulation of singles from 2015 and 2016. These are the songs that show their abilities best, and they are still loved by fans with So Sad, So Sad having almost 20 million streams on Spotify.
Maybe Fine Forever didn't do so well but Done With Bits shows promise.
Singer Steph’s high and airy vocals lend this song a dreamy and bright feel, and bassist Paul contrasts this with a deep rhythm. The synthesiser plays the most important part though, adding layers and texture and as the song draws to a close, the synth slowly fades out in a haze.
It’s nostalgic, its indie, it’s even got synth. Varsity has bounced back and landed safely, straight into your playlist...hopefully.
